Driver's licence renewal fees run roughly $20 to $90 across the states. Comparing those numbers directly is misleading, because the term length varies from four to eight years.

A $60 fee on an eight-year licence is $7.50 a year. A $35 fee on a four-year licence is $8.75 a year. The cheaper-looking one is the more expensive one.
Most states use a four, five, six or eight-year term, and several shorten it automatically for drivers over a certain age — commonly 65 or 70 — which raises the annual cost regardless of the headline fee.
What can change the fee for the same licence
REAL ID upgrade. Some states charge extra the first time; many charge the same. A REAL ID-compliant licence is required to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility with a licence rather than a passport.
Class of licence. Commercial licences and motorcycle endorsements cost more and often renew on a different schedule.
Renewal method. Online renewal is frequently a few dollars cheaper than in person, and several states allow it only every other cycle — one online, one in person, alternating.
Age. Some states discount or waive the fee for older drivers; others shorten the term, which costs more per year.
The late fees
This is where the numbers stop being small.
A licence renewed after expiry commonly carries a late fee. Past a longer window — often a year — many states no longer treat it as a renewal at all and require the full application process again, sometimes including the written and road tests.
Driving on an expired licence is a citation on its own, and in some states an arrestable offence once it has been expired long enough.
Renewal notices are posted to the address on file, which is the reason a change of address matters more than it appears to: most states require notification within 10 to 30 days of moving, and the practical consequence of not doing it is that the reminder goes somewhere else.
What a REAL ID renewal needs
Substantially more than an ordinary renewal, and it generally cannot be done online the first time:
- Proof of identity — certified birth certificate or valid passport
- Proof of Social Security number
- Two proofs of residency at the current address
- Proof of any legal name change linking the documents together
That last one is the common failure. A birth certificate in a maiden name and a utility bill in a married name need a marriage certificate between them, and arriving without it means a second trip.
Renewing from out of state
Most states allow a renewal by mail or online while temporarily away — military, students, extended travel — and several will issue a one-off extension where neither is possible. What none of them allow is renewing in a state you have moved to: once you establish residency somewhere else, you surrender the old licence and apply for a new one, usually within 30 to 90 days of moving.
That transfer is not a renewal and is not priced like one. It carries the new state's full application fee, the document checks above, a vision test, and in some states a written test — waived in most cases for a valid licence in good standing, not waived if the old one has already expired.
The practical rule: renew before moving if the expiry is close. A valid licence transfers easily; an expired one restarts the process.
Vision tests and medical conditions
Almost every state tests vision at renewal, which is a reason the online route is often restricted to alternate cycles — the in-person visit exists to check eyesight rather than to collect the fee.
Where a condition affects driving, states require disclosure and may issue a restricted licence: corrective lenses, daylight only, no motorway driving, or a shortened renewal term with medical review. Failing to disclose a condition the state requires reported can void insurance cover after a crash, which is a considerably larger financial exposure than any fee on this page.
